We are at a “diversity and inclusion” event organised by what is considered an elite European institution.
Speakers say “diversity” and “inclusion” a lot. Nobody mentions people with disabilities (except when Disability Rights Strategy is listed), unless I missed something.
Towards the end, my colleague asks about disability policies, and the next question is about disability too.
Answer is given, about reasonable accommodations.
Then it’s back to the podium and one of the main speakers says:
“When I studied I lived above the canteen and I wish I had disability so I wouldn’t smell it.”
He continues speaking about something else.
Nobody bats an eyelid.
I let out exasperated sigh, exchange looks with my colleague, utter some words loud enough for people around me to hear. They give me looks.
When the event is over, I go the speaker and tell him he shouldn’t be making such jokes, ever, let alone on “diversity and inclusion” events.
He pats me on a shoulder. He says “You are right.” And without ever turning to face me properly, he’s done with me and with this whole affair.
Did I mention everyone said “diversity” and “inclusion” a lot?
